Here’s another from Aimee Allen’s album, A Little Happiness. She’s the queen of creating musical happiness from heartache!

Lyrics you’ll love:

Aimee Allen, “Change in Weather”

I hit rock bottom,
Slapped and shot him,
Got him black and blue
He came back swingin’,
Didn’t know I was dealin’ with a devil in the things I do-ooh

But not today, not today
I’m gonna get a better life for me
I’m singin’ not today, not today
A reason to live alone

And I-I can do so much better
And I-I need a change in weather
And I-I can’t believe it’s true
But I’m finally over you

Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Yeah, I’m finally – over you

Slipped it in my drink,
It was the missing link,
Between being dead and being gone
Just when you think I’m beat,
I’m gettin’ on my feet,
And I’ll be dancing while you hear my song

All the way,
All the way,
All the way,
All the way down

I’ve never lions fed,
But I’m still stuffed in his mouth

And I-I can do so much better
And I-I need a change in weather
And I-I can’t believe it’s true
But I’m finally over you

Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Yeah, I’m finally – over you

You’re everything, that I love to hate
My own private, please stay
You’re everything, everything, that I love to hate
My own private – poh -lease stay

(Poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay
Poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay)
(Poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay
Poh-lease stay, poh-lease stay)
Yeah

And I-I can do so much better
And I-I need a change in weather
And I-I can’t believe it’s true

But I’m finally over you,
Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Yeah, I’m finally – over you
Over you…

Divorce Anthem: “On Vacation,” Aimee Allen

photoshoot for upcoming album

I was driving to work this morning listening to “Change in Weather” by Aimee Allen and thought that it’s another great song of hers I need to post as a divorce anthem. Then, I came on our site and realized I never even posted her number one breakup celebration song, “On Vacation!” Total fail on my part. I love Aimee and you will, too!

Here’s “On Vacation.”

Lyrics you’ll love: “Everthing is good/  Now that you are gone/ I’m dancing with my records on/  I don’t cry about you any more/ I’m so much better than I was before”

Just for fun, here’s a live version from when I filmed my old Internet TV show, Planet Verge, with Aimee:

Happy 311 Day! Here’s how the band helped me through my divorce

311-press-650-430

Happy 311 Day! March 11th is an annual, unofficial world-wide holiday in celebration of the band 311.

In my upcoming book, Trash the Dress: Stories of Celebrating Divorce in your 20s, I discuss how I’m not very religious but I come from the church of rock ‘n’ roll. Lyrics are my Gospel and lead me through life. One of the first bands that really shaped my life was 311. I discovered them in high school at a time when I was really figuring out into which social category I fell. I was surrounded by the hip-hop crowd in middle school but high school exposed me to new and diverse personalities. I discovered that I was a bit of a chameleon, fitting in with the straight-edge skate and surf crowd, the creative arts/ journalism folk, the do-good volunteer activists and general “normal” people. I was a medley and needed music just as diverse as myself. Enter the rock/ reggae/ska/ funk/ alt/ jazz/ etc sound of 311. I never heard anything like them before and was immediately hooked the first time I heard the song “Down.”

I kept a notebook filled with every 311 song lyric that inspired me. One of my favorites has always been “Give that girl wings and that’s all that she wrote.”

Years later, as I was going through my divorce, two particular lyrics floated through my mind and assured me everything would be OK:

“You’ve got to trust your instincts and let go of regret. You’ve got to bet on yourself now star, ’cause that’s your best bet,” from the song “All Mixed Up.”

And “From chaos comes clarity,” from the song “From Chaos.”

When my marriage first ended, I was at rock bottom. However, I chose to dance in the dirt. Surviving the worst times of my life with a smile has today enabled me to celebrate the very best of times. Clarity– and my greater life plan– indeed emerged from chaos. The church of rock ‘n’ roll has never steered me wrong.

So today, I honor a band that has been beside me for years and always provided motivation, clarification and celebration.

Divorce Anthem: “Bulimic,” The Used. Goodbye to you, Mr. Ex-Husband!

“I’m about to see a million things
I thought I’d never see before and
I’m about to do all of the things
I’ve dreamed of and
I don’t even miss you at all”

“Bulimic”

From the way that you acted
to the way that I felt it
It wasn’t worth my time
and now it’s sad cause all I missed
wasn’t that good to begin with
and now that I’ve started you begging
saying things that you don’t mean
it isn’t worth my time
a line’s a dime a million times
and I’m about to see all of them
Goodbye to you, goodbye to you, you’re taking up my time [x3]
Goodbye to you, goodbye to you
You call my name when I wake up
to see things go your way
I’m coughing up my time
each drag’s a drop of blood a grain
a minute of my life
it’s all I’ve got just to stay down
why the fuck am I still down
I’m hoarding all that’s mine
each time I let just one slip by
I’m wasting what is mine
Goodbye to you, goodbye to you, you’re taking up my time [x3]
Goodbye to you, goodbye to youMy time [x3]I’m about to see a million things
I thought I’d never see before and
I’m about to do all of the things
I’ve dreamed of and
I don’t even miss you at all
[x2]

Goodbye to you, goodbye to you, you’re taking up my time [x7]
Goodbye to you, goodbye to you

Divorce Anthem: “Divorce Song”

Don’t let the creepy screenshot fool you, this is actually a really funny song that you’ll enjoy. Thanks, Perverted Circus and Count Boogie, for giving us something to laugh about!

Watch the “Divorce Song”video:

Divorce Anthem: “Don’t Want you Back,” by Backstreet Boys

“Don’t Want you Back,” by Backstreet Boys came on my iPod the other day while I was driving to work. After taking a minute to walk down memory lane, past visions of all the heart-shaped signs I made stating,“AJ, I’m legal!,” and then thanking my guardian angels that my dreams of marrying that bad boy never came true, I realized this is a great divorce anthem. Enjoy this guilty pleasure, take time to reconnect with your younger self (sorry, ‘N Sync fans) and make it the ringtone for every time your ex-husband tries to contact you!

Divorce Anthem: Gin Wigmore, “Happy Ever After”

This one’s for all the twenty-something divorced women who were victims of a cheating husband.

Gin Wigmore‘s newest album, Gravel & Wine, features “Happy Ever After,” a song we’re adopting as a divorce anthem. Bonus awesomeness: Butch Walker produced the album and performs on many of the tracks. We’re thankful to finally be able to rock out to this accomplished Aussie in America!

Turn it up:

Divorce Anthem: Miranda Lambert, “Mama’s Broken Heart”

Let’s hope Miranda Lambert never has to go through a divorce. Yes, we know that would make her hottie hubby and fellow country music crooner, Blake Shelton, available. However, we’ll settle for watching him as a judge on The Voice and listening to this catchy divorce anthem, “Mama’s Broken Heart.” Watch. Love. Pin the pics!

Hey, Love! Here’s a Post-Divorce Anthem.

I was listening to one of my favorite songs, “Hey Love,” from my pals Maniac and couldn’t help but think it’s such a great divorce anthem. Here’s a live performance of this inspiring little ditty to remind you that new love will come when you least expect it!

Lyrics

Hey love
Take what you want
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love hey love
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love
Take what you want
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love hey love
Don’t make a stranger of me

Send me a smile send me a smile
Send me the moonrise
You’re wearing the face I don’t believe at all
Show me the door show me the door
Show me the doorway
Show me a door I’ll use it as a wall

Hey love
Take what you want
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love hey love
Don’t make a stranger of me

Show me the old show me the old
Show me the old one
You’re wearing the face that lied to you before
Show me the end show me the end
Show me the ending
Show me the end we’ll use it as a door

Hey love
Take what you want
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love hey love
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love
Take what you want
Don’t make a stranger of me
Hey love hey love
Don’t make a stranger of me

Divorce Anthem: “Ghetto Love,” Spinerette

“I’m Joan of Arc on a mission/ Avenge love’s death /I’m gonna win/ I’ll never give in”

– “Ghetto Love,” Spinerette

Lyrics:
Hey now, there now,
It’s a game to be played out amongst
Thieves of the heart and the whores of the ego
Hey now, there now
Kiss everyone’s ailments
See them rise up, exalt and illuminate

Humanity is a deer in the headlights
The road is covered in blood
Free yourself with a dagger from above
A crossbow of faith

You sold your heart
For the primal experience
Gave up on love for a
Medal malevolence

You fill yourself with
The fire of innocence
A karmic stain will bring back through the gates again

Oh how I wonder what will become of us
I’m just a girl out looking for love

You want in me what you see
Is a testament
You never know when you love
What you’ll manifest
I’m Joan of Arc on a mission
Avenge love’s death
I’m gonna win
I’ll never give in
